He was one of the 47 Ronin(master less samurai) who attacked and killed Kira Kouzukenosuke, avenging their late load, Asano Takuminokami's death. After they laid Kira's head to the grave of Asano, they turned themselves in to the authorities and were placed in the custody of Matsudaira Sadanao in 1702. Then they were sentenced to commit seppuku in 1703. This incident is also commonly known as "Chushingura"(the treasury of Loyal Retainers) . Actually, one of the Ronin, Horie yasubei was a samurai of the Shibata Domain, Niigata but he lost his position and left Niigata to Edo. On the way to Edo, he dropped here, the Shimoda residence and designed this beautiful garden.
