Photo by @GerdLudwig / @sleepingcars. For years, I’ve been photographing Sleeping Cars, primarily in Los Angeles but also during my travels around the globe. My cars are loners, who command their own space. Like a devoted bird watcher, I have learned to recognize their sleeping patterns. With voyeuristic pleasure I’ve spied on them in their nightgowns. I’ve watched some sleep in the nude; some take afternoon naps and a few lucky ones get to sleep together.
A few photographs were published in National Geographic Magazine as part of a Work in Progress, but the project has recently taken on new life. An exhibition of large format prints opens tonight at the @faheykleingallery in Los Angeles, and a monograph will follow this spring.
